  PM’s Manifesto pledges important changes to paying for care

The Conservative Party’s 2017 Manifesto promises to scrap the proposals set out in the Dilnot report if the Party is re-elected on 8 June – meaning that the intended cap on how much an individual might have to pay for their care could be abandoned.

Moreover, for the first time, the value of a person’s residential property would be included in the means testing eligibility process for receiving free care.

  Professional negligence – judge rules ‘peace of mind’ claim should proceed

A woman who is pursuing a claim for professional negligence against the law firm which handled her father’s inquest has been granted the right to proceed by the High Court.

The Judge ruled that law firms which do not provide clients with the ‘peace of mind’ that they have conducted a ‘satisfactory legal investigation’ may have to pay compensation for the distress caused.

Housebuilder apologises for leasehold deals dubbed ‘a national scandal’

One of the UK’s largest housebuilders has apologised to thousands of its customers for putting in place spiralling leasehold rents which have been described by MPs as “a national scandal.”

Some homeowners were sold properties which included Leases whose rents double in price every 10 years. Taylor Wimpey has become the first major housebuilder to admit the price hikes were unfair and the company has set aside £130 million to help redress the situation.  It is hoped that other housebuilders will follow suit following widespread criticism of the schemes which MPs also dubbed “the PPI of the housebuilding industry.”

  Research reveals scale of distressed businesses

New research suggests that a worrying number of British businesses fear that they would face closure within less than a year if their venture encountered a ‘critical event’ – such as the unexpected death of a key employee.

The research, which was carried out by insurance company Legal & General, also found that around 65 per cent of UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are currently struggling with business debt – an increase of 33 per cent over figures recorded in 2011.
