Police ramp up enforcement activity ahead of summer of football

The police will deploy more officers in a bid to keep the public safe during the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament this summer, it has been revealed.

The warning comes ahead of live international matches in London, while pubs and bars are set to broadcast the games to millions of football fans across the country.

According to police chiefs, the force has been working in collaboration with key partners, including the Football Association and the British Transport Police, to prevent crime and disorder during the global event.

This includes increased police presence at live games and a tactical roll-out of plain-clothed officers at key venues to respond to any crimes or critical incidents that may occur.

The force has also been in contact with owners of pubs and bars to raise awareness of public disorder and how to deal with anti-social behaviour, with an emphasis on excessive drinking and sexual violence.

Commenting on the report, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said: “We have a very experienced policing team in place and will be deploying a great many officers on the boroughs. We will also have a great many specialist units to prevent crime and disorder and respond effectively to any incidents or over-crowding.

“Our policing plan also has a particular focus on tackling domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, and hate crime – all of which are Met priorities. We will bring such offenders to account and support victims.”

According to news reports, some 1086 football-related incidents and 230 arrests were reported by police forces across the country during the 2018 World Cup. Approximately 226 of these incidents involved alleged acts of domestic abuse.
