Inquests

Inquests are held in circumstances where the death of an individual has been reported to a coroner and the coroner considers further investigation into the death is necessary.  This could be because the death occurred whilst in prison or other detention or where there is a possibility that a medical procedure contributed to or caused the death.

A coroner, and sometimes a jury, having heard evidence from invited witnesses (family members, doctors or individuals who may have relevant information) will determine who the deceased was and how, where and when they came to their death.

Families facing an inquest into the death of a loved one may not be aware that they are entitled to legal representation to review evidence, ask questions of witnesses, address matters of law and assist in pursuing a legal claim where a death is found to be avoidable.
