The Government’s white paper on immigration shows plans to introduce a range of new restrictions on employing workers from overseas.
The major changes affecting employers include:
Care homes will still be able to employ foreign nationals who are already in the UK on a worker’s visa.
The Government’s consultation on implementing mandatory ethnicity and disability pay gap reporting is still open for responses.
Launched on 18 March, the consultation aims to help shape the proposals that will be included in the upcoming Equality (Race and Disability) Bill.
Large employers (those with 250 employees or more) are already required to report on the gender pay gap. The Government hopes to promote further equality in the workplace by extending this mandatory reporting to include the ethnicity and disability pay gaps.
The consultation closes at 11:59pm on 10 June.
The Employment Rights Bill has passed its second reading in the House of Lords and reached the Committee Stage.
If implemented, the Bill would confer ban zero-hours contracts and fire-and-rehire practices, as well as confer new protections on employees, such as prevention from harassment.
In other news, the backlog of open cases at employment tribunals has risen by 23 per cent, according to new statistics from HM Courts and Tribunals Service.
Around 450,000 individuals are still waiting for their cases to be resolved.
